Summer, 1954. In a small town in the Ruhr, Matthias Lubanski, 11, waits with his mother and brothers and sisters for his father, a prisoner of war, to return home. An avid football fan, the young boy has long since adopted the national team's player Helmut Rahn as a surrogate father. He even earns a little pocket money by carrying bags for his idol. Rahn has convinced Matthias that he is the team mascot, and the player claims he can only win if the young boy is at the match. The summer of 1954 also sees the build-up to the World Cup in Bern, Switzerland, and whilst Germany's team prepares to travel to the Wankdorf stadium, the Lubanski family has to confront other problems : since his return, Matthias' father Richard has become sullen and aggressive. And he is none too happy to see his son go off to Switzerland with the German team...... Filmed entirely in Germany, in Westphalia, Das Wunder von Bern marks the filmmaker's return home after his experience in Hollywood (Der Himmel von Hollywood, 2002) and signals his political will to develop and fight for a viable film production sector in Europe.

Durant l'été 1954, dans une petite ville de la Ruhr, Matthias Lubanski, onze ans, attend, avec sa mère et ses frères et soeurs, le retour de son père, prisonnier de guerre. Fan de football, le jeune garçon a depuis longtemps trouvé dans le joueur de l'équipe nationale Helmut Rahn un père de substitution. Il gagne même un peu d'argent de poche en devenant le porteur de sac de son idole. Rahn a convaincu Matthias qu'il est sa mascotte et le joueur dit ne pas pouvoir gagner sans que le garçon assiste à ses matches. L'été 1954 est par ailleur marqué par la préparation de la Coupe du monde de football à Berne en Suisse. Et tandis que l'équipe d'Allemagne se prépare à faire le voyage pour le stade du Wankdorf, la famille Lubanski fait face à d'autres préoccupations : depuis son retour, Richard, le père de Matthias, a développé un caractère renfrogné et agressif. Et il ne voit pas d'un bon oeil son fils accompagner l'équipe allemande en Suisse... Entièrement tourné en Allemagne, en Westphalie, Das Wunder von Bern signe le retour du réalisateur dans son pays après son expérience hollywoodienne (Der Himmel von Hollywood, 2002) et marque sa volonté politique de désormais défendre et développer l'Europe comme espace de production cinématographique.
